RICHLAND CENTER, Wis. (Oct. 27, 2026)
– The Richland Hospital and Clinics has once again been recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review as a national leader in patient ratings for nurse communication, reflecting the dedication and compassion of its nursing staff.
According to recently released Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) data, 548 hospitals nationwide earned a five-star rating for nurse communication. Wisconsin led the nation with 41 hospitals receiving the distinction, including The Richland Hospital and Clinics.
“This rating is especially meaningful because it comes directly from our patients,” said Ken Nelson, vice president and chief nursing officer. “They are telling us how well our nurses listened, explained information and treated them with courtesy and respect. Those qualities remain at the heart of our mission: Our Patients, Above All Else.” The recognition is based on patient survey responses regarding their interactions with nurses during their hospital stay.
“Receiving this recognition again is a testament to the consistency and commitment of our nurses,” Nelson said. “They work hard every day to ensure patients feel heard, respected and informed throughout their health care journey.”
Alex Marshall, nursing director, said the award reflects the impact of meaningful patient interactions. In reviewing September surveys, the positive comments about nurse interactions was clear. “Always explained everything and was courteous,” is an example of such comments. “We never underestimate the power of a bedside conversation, a patient education moment or simply taking time to listen,” Marshall said. “It’s gratifying to see those efforts reflected in our patient surveys.”
It didn’t take a survey to help Kelly Bird share her feelings on the subject. “The care I received during my hospital visit – I can’t say enough good things. I knew I was in the best hands.
