A bone density scan determines an individual’s risk for osteoporosis, measuring the strength of a patient’s bones. This procedure utilizes an x-ray machine to scan the patient’s back and hip area and takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.

PET-CT scans combine two types of medical imaging: positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT). These scans provide a more comprehensive picture of a patient’s cellular functioning and assist doctors in diagnoses. PET-CT scans are particularly useful in early diagnoses of cancers, as well as certain heart and brain conditions.
A PET scan creates images of a patient’s organs and tissues at work. It differs from other types of medical imaging in that it requires a small amount of a radiotracer to be injected into a patient. This fluid is safe and quickly leaves the patient’s body. The PET scanner records the way cells interact with the fluid, revealing abnormalities that may indicate cancer or other concerns.
A CT scan uses X-rays to provide anatomical information that, when combined with the PET scan, helps your doctor accurately locate the specific area or tissues that are affected.
Because PET-CT scans show how your body is functioning at a cellular level, they can enable an early diagnosis of cancer. Your doctor may prescribe a PET-CT scan if they suspect you have cancer. If you are undergoing treatment for cancer, a PET-CT scan can assess the effectiveness of those treatments. These scans can also be used to provide detailed information about heart function, clarifying what treatments may be needed or what areas of the heart may be compromised.
PET scans are generally very safe. The radiotracer fluid used in PET scans contains only a small amount of radioactive material and leaves the body in a short amount of time. Patients are encouraged to drink plenty of water following the procedure to help flush the tracer from their system.
These scans are not recommended for nursing mothers or women who are pregnant, as the radiation may harm a fetus or an infant. In other very rare cases, some patients have an allergic reaction to ingredients in the radiotracer. These are usually mild.
Richland Hospital has a new 3D Mammography machine! The Pristina Dueta™ was designed with the objective of putting patients at ease—without the squeeze. Most women* are aware that early detection of cancer can reduce deaths; yet, due to anxiety, 1 in 4 will delay or simply not schedule their regular mammogram. Of those surveyed who experienced the Pristina Dueta™, 93% said having access to the patient-assist compression remote made them less anxious.
Using the remote, the patient can control how much pressure is placed on the breast as it is X-rayed. Adding to the comfort factor, the machine’s rounded corners, thinner image detector, and armrests add up to an improved experience. Not only does it take more images with additional angles, but the accuracy and clarity of those images allows doctors to get a better look at the breast tissue and surrounding areas. Where patients are concerned, the best part is the remote control. The measure of relief this brings translates into fewer cancellations of mammograms, better images, earlier detection of problems, and improved outcomes.
