COLONSCOPY
EARLY DETECTION WITH COLONOSCOPIES
According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer – rectum or colon cancer – is the third leading cancer killer of U.S. deaths each year. A colonoscopy, the most effective colon cancer test, makes Colorectal Cancer one of the most preventable cancers.
Fortunately, the Richland Hospital performs several hundred colonoscopies each year to patients from all over Southwest Wisconsin. Our innovative approach to procedures includes personalized and specific care; compassionate, exceptional staff; and a family of healthcare professionals supporting you.
SCREENING AND TEST RECOMMENDATIONS
A colonoscopy procedure is the Richland Hospital’s preferred colorectal cancer screening. A colonoscopy doctor can find and remove colon polyps before they become cancerous, or have a chance to grow or spread.
Starting at age 50, or if you have a family history of bowel cancer, the Richland Hospital highly recommends that you have a colon cancer test. Furthermore, if you have higher risk factors, we recommend you receive a colonoscopy procedure earlier and more frequently than the average.
NEW METHOD MAKES COLONOSCOPIES MORE COMFORTABLE
During a colonoscopy, medical air has traditionally been used to inflate the large colon for better visibility. Here at the Richland Hospital, we now use carbon dioxide (CO2) to achieve this. Because CO2 is more easily and readily absorbed by the body its use has greatly reduced cramping, bloating, and gassiness after the procedure for our patients.
