Sleep Services at The Richland Hospital
The Richland Hospital offers comprehensive sleep services in partnership with Whitney Sleep Center.
Board Certified Sleep Physician – Dr. Courtney Whitney provides telemedicine consultation to assess symptoms, recommend any necessary diagnostic tests and provide treatments or therapies to improve the quality of your sleep.
Overnight Sleep Study/Polysomnogram (PSG)
To aid in diagnosis of a sleep disorder, most patients will need an overnight sleep study called a polysomnogram (PSG). During the sleep study, polysomnographic technologists attach a variety of devices to the patient, to observe the patient’s sleep patterns. The devices monitor brain waves, heart rate, eye movements, airflow and leg movements. Treatments for disorders such as sleep apnea may be started during the study.
Sleep studies are conducted at The Richland Hospitals sleep suites at the Hospital. The Sleep Center operates two specially equipped sleep rooms, with queen sized beds, an on suite bathroom and shower. All testing personnel are registered polysomnographic technologists.
Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT)
Other patients may require a Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), which evaluates a patient’s level of sleepiness.
PSGs and MSLTs are performed by highly trained technologists, who will monitor and record a patient’s parameters including brain waves, eye movements, oxygen saturation, respiratory effort, airflow and leg movements. PSG and MSLT results are reviewed by the Sleep Center’s physician, Dr. Courtney Whitney, and will be reviewed with the patient.
A formal analysis report, including the patient’s diagnosis and treatment recommendations, is forwarded to the patient’s referring physician. Some of the treatments may include Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), oral appliances, surgical procedures or medication. CPAP equipment can be obtained through a durable medical equipment supplier of your choice.
Insurance reimbursement is available in most cases. For questions on exact payments, please contact your insurance company. Patients will be referred to an appropriate provider if insurance coverage does not apply.
