| Orthopaedics
is a medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, treatment,
rehabilitation and prevention of injuries and diseases of your body's musculoskeletal system. This complex system includes your bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves, and allows you to move, work and be active.
A common myth about orthopaedics is that once a patient is
referred to an orthopaedic surgeon, surgery is the inevitable avenue of
treatment. In reality, orthopaedic surgeons utilized a variety of methods
to treat injuries and diseases including medication, exercise, therapy, or
lifestyle changes. Only when it is the best strategy for the patient does
the orthopaedic surgeon operate .

Arthroscopic Surgery
is one of the best tools available to the orthopaedic surgeon today. Surgeons can repair, reconstruct and diagnose certain damaged tissues of a joint using an
arthroscope.
For the procedure, a tiny camera is inserted into a patients joint (wrist, elbow, shoulder, ankle, knee, or hip) through small incisions (about the size of a thumbnail), allowing the surgeon to see directly into the joint. From there the surgeon can assess the damage to the joint surface, soft tissues (such as ligaments) or torn meniscal cartilage, in the case of the knee. After diagnosing the problem the surgeon can, in some instances during the same procedure, correct the problem using specialized small instruments.
The use of an arthroscope benefits the patients because there is less trauma to the joint as compared to open surgical procedures and it provides a more accurate diagnosis. Arthroscopy is done as an out-patient procedure and generally allows for quick recovery and minimal scarring.

| Physical
and Occupational Therapists from the Richland Hospitals Rehabilitation department coordinate with the Orthopaedic Surgeon to develop an individualized rehabilitation program for patients. Through the use of exercise, modalities, balance training and posture training, the therapists help patients increase or improve their range of motion, strength, functional skills and posture. The focus is on the patients return to sports, work environment, and / or activities of daily living.
